This week, is Independent Booksellers Week and stores around the world are throwing themselves a party. The campaign is designed to encourage “independent bookshops, great books, strong reading communities, and the idea of shopping locally and sustainably,” according to the website.
However, in Nigeria the bulk of bookstores are independently owned. Many are run as passion projects by men and women dedicated to bringing good books to the public. Unfortunately, these shops are subjects to the vagaries of a public that seldom reads for pleasure.
Most bookstores survive by selling textbooks, religious and self help manuals and other kinds of stationary. But there are a good number who also sell great works of local and international literature.
Here is a list of some of them. Find the nearest one to you and stop by this week. We guarantee you’ll find something to surprise and delight you. And if you’re already a bookstore afficionado, tell us what’s your favourite store to get your literary fix?
